With an image of shimmering towers rising up next to shining seas and multistar resorts, Dubai has a reputation as a playground for the wealthy. While it’s possible to completely immerse yourself in the lap of luxury without thinking about price, those of us wanting to save a buck or two can enjoy what Dubai has to offer too.
Stay Near the Airport
Still just minutes away from the beaches and high-rise buildings, cheap hotels in Dubai can be found here that are quite nice. With convenient freeway access for drivers and short walks to public transportation, getting around isn’t a problem. Take a look at Crowne Plaza Festival City, a hotel that brings great amenities and is close to Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium, where top players come each February for world-class tournaments. It’s also a multipurpose venue hosting concerts and other events.
The Bastakia Quarter is old-town Dubai, built during the 19th century by Persian merchants. It’s situated along the eastern end of Dubai Creek where it comes in from the sea, and it’s the place where you discover historic sites like Al Fahidi Fort. Just across the creek, you find the Flora Grand Hotel, a location offering value compared to downtown and resort areas but still quite comfortable. Here, you can see what Dubai was like before the skyscrapers.
Shop the Souks
The Dubai Mall is the largest in the world and has many fantastic shops. However, bargain hunters can forego the mall and head to the souks near Dubai Creek. For the record, it’s not a creek at all, but a salt water inlet off the Arabian Sea, and it’s surrounded by interesting things to do and souks with much more palatable prices.
Ride the Metro
Instead of shelling out money for a taxi or rental car, plan to take advantage of the modern and inexpensive metro rail system running through the city. Baniyas Square Metro Station Two is right next to Deira Gold Souk, and the line circles around to Deira Fish Market and the Spice Souk as well. A good hotel choice is Novotel Dubai Deira City Centre, which is right next to a Metro station.
Dubai is a world-class destination city with myriad things to enjoy. Here, you can explore the desert, relax on incredible beaches, slip into the lap of luxury and find fantastic shopping. Doing it without spending too much is easy with just a little research.
